There are some very good reasons to be a Ludwig fan right now. Season 2 has already brought David Mitchell’s wonderfully awkward puzzle setter back for another collection of seemingly impossible crimes; American viewers can finally stream the new episodes on BritBox, and the BBC has confirmed the series will return for Season 3!

Before any of that next chapter arrives, though, there is another murder to solve.

A special 60-minute Ludwig Christmas special is coming this festive season, and the setting sounds almost made for fans who enjoy classic country-house mysteries.

John, Lucy and Henry will find themselves stuck at a remote hotel in Yorkshire; a blizzard will cut everyone off from the outside world, and a killer will be somewhere inside.

Better still, one of the suspects will be played by none other than Sir David Suchet!!

Yes, the man who spent more than two decades solving Agatha Christie murders as Hercule Poirot is finally getting the chance to sit on the other side of the investigation while David Mitchell works out who did it.

What Is the Ludwig Christmas Special About?

The Christmas special takes John Taylor, Lucy Betts-Taylor and Henry away from Cambridge and sends them to a remote Christmas-themed hotel in Yorkshire.

It is supposed to be a much-needed break, and as anyone who watches murder mysteries will already suspect, that plan does not last very long.

A sudden blackout interrupts the festivities before a snowstorm leaves the hotel completely cut off. But then a murder takes place, nobody can leave, and it would seem that the killer is one of the people trapped inside.

John is therefore faced with a classic locked-room style problem, with the added pressure of having to solve it before Christmas.

David Suchet Goes From Detective to Suspect

You have no idea how excited I was to see that David Suchet had been cast, and even better, he’s a suspect.

David Mitchell has said that he has watched every episode of Poirot several times and described working with Suchet as something he had wanted to do for years.

Suchet, meanwhile, joked about how pleasant it was to play a suspect rather than the detective and be able to sit back while Mitchell handled the final explanation.

Honestly, I can’t imagine a much better Christmas casting.

When Can UK Viewers Watch the Ludwig Christmas Special?

The special will air on BBC One and BBC iPlayer in the UK during Christmas 2026. However, at the time of writing this, and after much sleuthing on the web, I don’t have the exact broadcast date, largely because the BBC haven’t actually announced one yet.

As soon as they do, I, of course, will let you know. That said, it is one of the biggest BBC shows of 2026, with only Traitors surpassing it in viewing numbers, so I reckon it will get a proper peak-viewing Christmas slot, possibly even on Christmas Day.

If you are a UK viewer, you can currently watch Ludwig Season 2 on BBC iPlayer, where the full six-episode season is available following its BBC One run.

The Christmas episode technically forms part of the Season 2 commission, although it works as its own hour-long festive mystery.

When Does Ludwig Season 2 Air in the US?

American viewers have had a slightly longer wait for Season 2. The new season premiered on BritBox in the US on October 13th, 2026, with episodes being released weekly.

There are six episodes in total, meaning the US run continues through November 17th.

Season 2 follows John after he becomes an official Crime Scene Consultant, meaning he can finally investigate strange cases without pretending to be his missing twin brother James.

Unfortunately, becoming an official police employee creates a new problem, because John is not allowed to use police resources to investigate James’ disappearance, leaving him and Lucy to continue that search separately.

BritBox has also announced that the Christmas special will be coming to the service during the festive season, although an exact US release date has not yet been confirmed. So at least you won’t have to wait until 2027 for the Christmas special!

Ludwig Season 3 Is Already Happening

Perhaps the best news of all is that viewers do not have to spend Christmas wondering whether Ludwig will continue. The BBC commissioned Season 3 before Season 2 had even premiered, a huge show of confidence in the series.

Production is now underway, with filming beginning in September 2026. And, as expected, David Mitchell will return as John, while Anna Maxwell Martin is also confirmed to return as Lucy.

Season 3 will once again have six 60-minute episodes, and I expect it to follow the same timeline, around the end of August/early September 2027.

The early renewal is not especially surprising when you look at the numbers. The first season became the BBC’s biggest scripted TV launch since at least 2018, while its opening episode eventually reached 11.8 million viewers.

The show has also proved successful outside Britain, including on BritBox in North America. And, in a bit of a twist, ABC has commissioned a US version called ‘Rabbit‘ (yes, really!), moving the story from Cambridge, England to Cambridge, Massachusetts.

Whether anything will come of it remains to be seen!

A Very Good Time to Be a Ludwig Fan

Ludwig Christmas Special

What started as a clever twist on the amateur detective format has quickly grown into a much bigger success than anyone might have expected.

John no longer needs to spend every week pretending to be James, but the central mystery of his brother’s disappearance remains, while his new position with the police gives the show a simple way to keep presenting him with strange cases to solve.

Now we have a snowy locked-room Christmas mystery, David Suchet sitting among the suspects, and a third season already being filmed.

For cozy mystery fans, that makes Ludwig one of the safest shows to become invested in right now.

There is plenty more to come, and before Season 3 gives John another set of impossible crimes, he first has the small matter of finding a murderer in a Yorkshire hotel before Christmas.
