Cozy crime is a gentler branch of the mystery genre, where the focus is usually on solving the crime rather than the darker details of the crime itself.
These mysteries often feature close-knit communities, memorable characters, plenty of suspects and an intriguing puzzle at the center of the story.
Murders certainly happen, but graphic violence and disturbing details usually take a back seat to clues, secrets and figuring out whodunit.
Many cozy mysteries feature amateur sleuths, although police officers, private investigators and professional detectives can also take center stage.
Who Are the Most Popular Cozy Crime Authors?
Agatha Christie remains one of the biggest names associated with traditional cozy-style mysteries, particularly through characters such as Hercule Poirot or Miss Marple.
Other much-loved names include M.C. Beaton, creator of Agatha Raisin and Hamish Macbeth, and Louise Penny, whose Chief Inspector Armand Gamache novels are centered around the Quebec village of Three Pines.

Shows such as Midsomer Murders, Death in Paradise, The Marlow Murder Club, Shakespeare & Hathaway and The Madame Blanc Mysteries combine murder with humor, memorable settings and characters viewers enjoy returning to.
What Makes Cozy Crime Different From Other Mystery Genres?
The biggest difference is usually tone.
A cozy mystery can involve murder, danger and serious subjects, but it generally avoids dwelling on graphic violence. The investigation, characters and clues matter more than showing the crime itself.
