Bookish Season 2 Is Here, With a US Release and Christmas Special Still to Come
Fans of Bookish have plenty to look forward to. Mark Gatiss’s period murder mystery has returned for a second season in the UK, and the future of Gabriel Book is already secure with both a two-part Christmas special and a third season confirmed.
Season 2 premiered on U&Alibi in the UK on Wednesday, August 26th, 2026, bringing Gabriel Book back to his wonderfully unusual life as a bookseller who seems to spend almost as much time helping the police solve murders as he does selling books.
American viewers will have a slightly longer wait. PBS Distribution holds the North American rights, and Bookish Season 2 is expected to arrive in the US in 2027, although PBS has not yet announced a firm premiere date.
Generally, there is a five or six-month gap (but not always), and while that wait may be frustrating, there is certainly enough happening in Gabriel Book’s world to make Season 2 worth keeping an eye on.
Bookish Returns With Memento Mori

Season 2 opens with the two-part mystery Memento Mori, which takes Gabriel into the strange world of spiritualism.
Jason Watkins guest stars as charismatic medium Harold Sneed, who conducts a séance attended by a collection of people who soon find themselves at the center of a murder investigation. Gabriel is once again reunited with Inspector Bliss as they try to work out what really happened and whether the supernatural has anything to do with it.
The story also touches on a much darker part of Britain’s recent past, with the investigation raising the question of whether a notorious fascist, supposedly executed, could somehow be connected to the killing.
It is wonderfully Bookish, with an old-fashioned murder puzzle filled with strange characters, hidden motives, and just enough darkness beneath the humor.
Three New Mysteries in Bookish Season 2
As with the first season, Season 2 contains six episodes split into three two-part cases.
After Memento Mori, Gabriel becomes involved in Dead Man’s Whistle when a body is found in unusual circumstances inside a gentleman’s outfitters, where elderly tailor Maxie Kleinmann seems rather too eager to confess to the murder.
Inspector Bliss and Book quickly suspect that the truth is far more complicated.
The third case, Killer Nacht, takes the story much further from Book’s familiar London bookshop when Gabriel and Jack head to post-war Germany while trying to stop a book thief known as Duchess Alberta, played by Miranda Richardson.
What initially appears to be a hunt for a thief turns into something considerably more serious once the pair arrive at a castle filled with suspicious characters and old secrets.
Season 2 also continues the personal story running through the series. Alongside Mark Gatiss, Connor Finch returns as Jack, Polly Walker as Trottie Book, Elliot Levey as Inspector Bliss, Buket Kömür as Nora and Blake Harrison as Sergeant Morris.
Among the guest cast are Jason Watkins, Miranda Richardson, Rupert Graves, Claire Skinner, Ruth Codd, Allan Corduner, Ingrid Oliver and Simon Callow.
Trouble for Gabriel and Trottie?

One of the things that makes Bookish more than a standard murder-of-the-week series is Gabriel’s home life.
Gabriel is gay, which in 1946 Britain was illegal. His lavender marriage to childhood friend Trottie provides protection for Gabriel, but theirs is also a genuine and complicated friendship rather than simply a convenient arrangement.
However, I can tell you now that Season 2 puts that relationship under a lot of pressure when the charming Colonel Reggie Winters (Rupert Graves) becomes increasingly close to Trottie. The season ends with the impression that Trottie may have made a very difficult choice – we just don’t know what it is yet!
When Will Bookish Season 2 Be Released in the US?
American viewers first met Gabriel Book on PBS at the start of 2026. Season 1 aired from January 11th through February 15th, 2026, while PBS Passport subscribers were able to stream all six episodes from the premiere date.
The good news is that Season 2 is also heading to the US, and current reports point toward a 2027 US release, but as of August 31, 2026, PBS has not announced the exact date – though January is the most likely.
Bookish Is Getting a Christmas Special
Even better news arrived shortly before Season 2 began. UKTV has officially ordered a two-part Christmas special titled Bookish: The Crown of Destiny.
The special will consist of two 70-minute episodes and is due to air on U&Alibi in December 2026, but again, an exact broadcast date has not yet been announced.
The doors of Book’s Books on Archangel Lane will once again open for a new seasonal mystery, and even though plot details are being kept quiet for now, we have been promised a festive case filled with surprises.
There is one important point for American fans – a US date for the Christmas special has not yet been confirmed. It is possible PBS could show it separately around Christmas, but it could also be held until after PBS has aired Season 2 in 2027. At present, neither option has been officially announced.
And Bookish Season 3 Is Already Confirmed

Gabriel’s cases will also continue beyond Christmas, as Bookish Season 3 has been officially confirmed with another six 70-minute episodes, and production is due to begin later in 2026, with the season planned for broadcast in 2027.
That is quite a vote of confidence in a show that only debuted in 2025. The first season averaged around 1.5 million viewers and became U&Alibi’s second-highest-performing premiere, while the series has now been sold into more than 100 international markets.
Where Is Bookish Filmed?
Perhaps the best bit of Bookish trivia is that Gabriel’s very English-looking corner of 1946 London isn’t always London at all.
A large amount of the series is filmed in Belgium, with its streets and period buildings being used to stand in for post-war Britain. The production is made by Eagle Eye Drama, which also makes Patience, A Taste For Murder and Professor T. Bookish is made in association with Happy Duck Films and receives support from the Belgian Tax Shelter.
It helps explain why the show has such a strong period look without relying entirely on modern London streets dressed to resemble the 1940s.
With Season 2 now underway, a Christmas special coming in December and Season 3 already confirmed, Bookish has quickly become one of the more dependable new names in British mystery television.
For US fans, the main question now isn’t whether Gabriel Book will return, but exactly when PBS will open the doors of Book’s Books again in 2027.
