Ann Cleeves has confirmed that her next Vera Stanhope novel, the twelfth in the series, will be the last time we meet Vera on the page.

As a long‑time cozy crime fan, that feels like the end of a very specific era.

Ann has been open this year about wanting to bring Vera’s story to a “natural end” rather than let the series run on forever.

On her official site she explains that there will be one more Vera novel after The Dark Wives, and that book will close the series.

The same message has been echoed in media coverage and reader guides, which now refer to the twelfth Vera book as the final instalment.

She first shared the news at live events, including the Bath Literature Festival, where she told readers there would only be one more Vera novel, while also hinting she did not plan to kill Vera off.

Where The Vera Books Are Up To

Right now, the most recent Vera Stanhope novel is The Dark Wives, published in August 2024.

That book is the eleventh full‑length Vera novel, bringing the series to a quarter of a century in print since The Crow Trap appeared back in 1999.

The next book will therefore be number twelve, and that is the one Ann has marked as the end.

Ann has talked about how lucky she feels that Vera has not had to age in real time, even though readers have been following her for 25 years.

She has also said that she wants to choose the right moment to stop, rather than keep going past the point where the stories feel fresh and grounded in place.

TV Farewell and The Books

Vera

What makes this announcement feel even bigger is that the ITV series has just wrapped up, too.

Series 14 was confirmed as the final run of Vera on television, with the very last episode airing on 2 January 2025 and based on The Dark Wives.

ITV even scheduled a special documentary, Vera, Farewell Pet, to say goodbye to Brenda Blethyn’s version of the character.

Ann and Brenda were recently honoured together by the Royal Television Society for their contribution to Vera, which felt like a joint curtain call for the TV and book versions of the character.

Ann has said she would wait to see how the television story is wrapped up before she sits down to write Vera’s final case, so the two mediums are still in quiet conversation even at the end.

What This Means For Cozy Mystery Readers

As a cozy crime reader, the idea of no more new Vera novels is bittersweet, but it also makes sense.

Ann has always rooted Vera in real communities and landscapes, especially in Northumberland, and she has said that place is where her stories begin.

Ending the series by choice gives her the chance to shape a final story that feels emotionally right for Vera, rather than simply winding down.

At the same time, this is not Ann Cleeves stepping away from crime fiction altogether. She is still writing her Two Rivers series, and interviews this year have made it clear that she has no plans to retire from storytelling.

So while we are losing one beloved detective, we are not losing Ann’s voice in the genre.

Incidentally, the next Two Rivers book will be called The Dying Light, and it is due to be published in October 2026.

Looking Ahead to Vera’s Final Case

We do not yet have a title or publication date for the last Vera book, only the confirmation that it is in the works and will follow The Dark Wives, which was published in August 2024.

Everything suggests it will be a full novel rather than a novella or spin‑off, bringing the series to a neat twelve books.

When it arrives, this last case will carry a lot of weight for long‑time readers who have walked the Northumberland hills with Vera since the late 1990s.

On my cozy mystery site, I will be following every update on the book’s progress and sharing reading guides for the earlier novels, so we can all give Vera the farewell she deserves.

when is the last Vera mystery coming out, please?

    1. Hi Dianne, I’ve done a little digging, and although there is no title for the book yet, it will be published in hardback on October 7th, 2027 – so another year to wait, I’m afraid!
