If you’ve ever found yourself wishing your book club meetings involved a little less wine and a little more crime-solving, you’re in for a treat.

The beloved residents of Coopers Chase are packing up their magnifying glasses and heading straight to your screens.

Yes, you read that right: Richard Osman’s runaway bestseller, The Thursday Murder Club, is officially coming to Netflix, and the wait for its release is almost over.

Mark your calendars, set your reminders, and maybe even dust off your deerstalker hat because the film drops globally on August 28, 2025.

From Bestseller to Blockbuster

Let’s rewind a bit. When Richard Osman, known to many as the charming host of Pointless, quietly penned The Thursday Murder Club in 2020, he probably didn’t foresee the literary juggernaut it would become.

The book, which follows four spirited retirees who form a club to solve cold cases (as you do), became an instant hit.

It topped bestseller lists, spawned sequels faster than you can say “whodunit,” and made Osman a household name in both bookish and non-bookish circles.

Naturally, Hollywood came knocking. In a move that had fans clutching their pearls (and their bookmarks), Steven Spielberg’s Amblin Entertainment snapped up the film rights in a competitive auction even before the ink on the first edition was dry.

Fast forward a few years, and we’re now on the cusp of seeing these amateur sleuths brought to life by an ensemble cast that reads like a who’s who of British acting royalty.

The Cast: A Dream Team of Detectives

Now, let’s talk about the cast, because frankly, it’s enough to make even the most stoic crime novelist giddy.

Dame Helen Mirren steps into the sensible shoes of Elizabeth Best, the former spy whose poker face could win championships.

Joining her is Pierce Brosnan, trading in his Bond tuxedo for Ron Ritchie’s more casual retirement attire. Honestly, I’m not sure about this one but happy to be proved wrong!!

Sir Ben Kingsley brings gravitas (and perhaps a touch of mischief) to the role of Ibrahim Arif, the ex-psychiatrist, while Celia Imrie rounds out the quartet as the ever-curious nurse, Joyce Meadowcroft.

And that’s just the tip of the iceberg. The supporting cast is a smorgasbord of talent, including David Tennant, Jonathan Pryce, Naomi Ackie, Daniel Mays, Henry Lloyd-Hughes, Richard E. Grant, Tom Ellis, Paul Freeman, Geoff Bell, Sarah Niles, and Ingrid Oliver.

If you’re thinking, “Wait, isn’t that half of the British acting community?” – well, you’re not far off.

Behind the Scenes

The film is helmed by Chris Columbus, the director who brought us Home Alone and the first two Harry Potter films.

If anyone knows how to balance heart, humor, and a dash of danger, it’s Columbus. He’s working from a script co-written with comedian Katy Brand, so expect the film to retain the book’s trademark wit and warmth (and possibly a few surprises along the way).

Music comes courtesy of Thomas Newman, a 15-time Oscar nominee whose scores have elevated everything from American Beauty to Skyfall. In other words, your ears are in for a treat, too.

Filming wrapped up in September 2024, and Netflix has already teased us with a few tantalizing set photos – enough to spark wild speculation about who’s wearing what and whether Helen Mirren really does her own stunts (jury’s still out on that one).

The Plot: Murder, Mayhem, and Mahjong

For those new to the club, here’s the setup: In the tranquil (on the surface, at least) retirement village of Coopers Chase, four residents meet every Thursday to dig into unsolved murders.

But when a real-life killing lands right on their doorstep, their hobby suddenly becomes a lot more… well, urgent.

What follows is a twisty, turny, and often hilarious journey through secrets, lies, and the kind of British countryside only murder mysteries can provide.

Director Chris Columbus has promised a faithful adaptation, though he’s also hinted at a few tweaks to keep even die-hard fans on their toes.

“We’re sticking with the storyline of the first novel,” Columbus shared, “but some events and plot devices have been changed.

“Other scenes were omitted for time, but the essence of the book’s sharp, witty humor and the emotional complexity of each character has been preserved.

“The film is a very faithful adaptation of the novel”.

Why This Movie Matters (and Why You’ll Love It)

Let’s be honest: the world can always use more clever mysteries, especially those that don’t take themselves too seriously.

The Thursday Murder Club movie isn’t just another whodunit; it’s a celebration of friendship, second (or third, or fourth) acts, and the idea that adventure doesn’t have an age limit.

The film promises to deliver all that, wrapped in a cozy British package with a cast that could probably solve real crimes if they put their minds to it (though hopefully, they’ll stick to acting).

And for those worried about how the book’s unique charm will translate to the screen, rest easy.

With Osman himself involved, a director who knows his way around both magic and mayhem, and a script that’s been lovingly crafted, it’s shaping up to be a film that respects its source material while offering a few new treats for fans and newcomers alike.

What’s Next for the Club?

If you’re already planning your watch party, you’ll be pleased to know that this might just be the beginning.

Osman’s Thursday Murder Club series now boasts several sequels, with a fifth book, The Impossible Fortune, set to hit shelves in September 2025, just in time for a post-movie reading binge.

Netflix has even hinted that Osman’s other series, We Solve Murders, could be getting the adaptation treatment, too.

So if you find yourself hooked on the adventures of Elizabeth, Joyce, Ron, and Ibrahim, there’s plenty more sleuthing in your future.

The Final Countdown

So, there you have it. The wait is (almost) over, and The Thursday Murder Club movie is poised to become your new favorite mystery.

Whether you’re a die-hard fan of the books or just love a good detective story with a twist, this is one club you’ll definitely want to join.

Circle August 28, 2025, on your calendar, gather your fellow armchair detectives, and get ready for a night of intrigue, laughter, and maybe a little bit of murder (the fictional kind, of course).

After all, as any good club member knows, Thursdays are for mysteries, and this one promises to be a case worth solving.

I’ve read all of the books and was looking forward to a film version. I had assumed that I would see it at a cinema. I don’t have, or want, Netflix.
The casting is perfection – they all look as I imagined when reading the books.
