There’s good news for fans of gentle mayhem in small-town New Zealand: The Brokenwood Mysteries is set to return for season 12!

Filming wrapped in November 2025, and if the release date follows past formats, we should see it back on Acorn TV around April 2026.

Sadly, that does not include UK fans, who will have to wait a teeny bit longer, as it airs first on U&Drama before landing on Acorn.

The good news is that it doesn’t take very long, but you will still have to wait until around August 2026!

Luckily, that gives us just enough time to polish our boots, pour a glass of Brokenwood wine, and get ready for another batch of delightfully twisty murders.

What is The Brokenwood Mysteries About?

The Brokenwood Mysteries is a New Zealand detective whodunnit and comedy-drama that first aired in 2014, and has quietly grown into a cozy favorite for mystery lovers around the world.

The series is set in the fictional rural town of Brokenwood, a place with about 5,000 residents, a healthy wine industry, and an unfortunate habit of turning up bodies in vineyards, golf bunkers, and community events.

It combines classic puzzle-plot murders with offbeat humor, lush countryside views, and the comforting rhythm of a close-knit ensemble cast.

The show was created by Tim Balme, who also serves as head writer and producer, and it leans into the “modern Midsomer” feel while keeping a distinctly Kiwi voice.

The episodes are feature-length, so each mystery feels like a standalone film, but the character relationships and running gags build slowly over time, rewarding all of us long-term viewers.

The Cozy Mystery Plots

At the heart of the series is Detective Senior Sergeant Mike Shepherd, who arrives from Auckland to investigate a local police officer and somehow ends up staying on permanently in Brokenwood.

He’s a country-music-loving, slightly rumpled detective with several ex-wives, a vintage Holden Kingswood, and a habit of talking to the dead that’s surprisingly effective for solving crimes.

His methods are unconventional, but his instincts are sharp, giving the show that satisfying mix of oddball charm and solid detective work.

Working alongside him is Detective Kristin Sims, who starts out exasperated by Shepherd’s laid-back style and slowly grows into his trusted partner.

Kristin is organized, serious about procedure, and unlucky in love, which makes for plenty of dry, character-based humor as their professional respect deepens over the seasons. She’s also terrible at making coffee!

The tone stays firmly in cozy territory: the murders can be grisly in setup, but the focus is on clever clues, quirky suspects, and the emotional lives of the characters rather than graphic detail.

Season 12: What To Expect

Season 12 has completed production, with filming wrapping in November 2025, and is expected to continue the six-episode format that began with season 7.

While specific episode details haven’t been announced yet, the established pattern suggests more murder in very local, very Brokenwood settings: community events gone wrong, niche clubs with deadly secrets, and everyday places where someone just happens to end up inconveniently dead.

If past seasons are any guide, we can also expect at least one episode that leans into a particular subculture or theme – Brokenwood has already tackled everything from steampunk gatherings to theatre productions and book clubs, so the possibilities are wide open.

For North American viewers, Acorn TV has become the home of new seasons, with season 10 launching there in late April 2024 and season 11 arriving in April 2025.

Season 12 is therefore likely to follow that same spring pattern on Acorn in April 2026, with UK viewers getting it a little later once it airs on U&DRAMA (formerly Drama), probably around late summer 2026.

Think of it as a seasonal ritual: just as you’re ready for a fresh wave of comfort viewing, Brokenwood rolls back in with another pack of very suspicious villagers.

Cast and Characters

The series is anchored by Neill Rea as Mike Shepherd, whose low-key, slightly shambolic style hides a keen mind and a deep sense of empathy for both victims and suspects.

Fern Sutherland plays Detective Kristin Sims, whose sharp wit and exasperated eye-rolls are almost as essential to the show as the murder weapons.

Jarod Rawiri joined the main cast as Detective Constable Daniel Chalmers in series 7, stepping in after Nic Sampson’s Sam Breen left town for a new life in the Solomon Islands.

Chalmers brings a grounded, no-nonsense energy and strong local ties, which adds nicely to the team dynamic.

Rounding out the core ensemble is Cristina Ionda as Dr. Gina Kadinsky, the eccentric medical examiner whose dramatic Russian flair, blunt observations, and not-so-subtle crush on Shepherd give many scenes a playful edge.

The world of Brokenwood is further enriched by recurring locals: Ray Neilson, the pub owner with his fingers in most of the town’s hospitality, and defense lawyer Dennis Buchanan, who is always ready to make the police work harder for a conviction.

And no article about The Brokenwood Mysteries would be complete without mentioning the lovable Frankie “Frodo” Oades.

He is a kindhearted, slightly hapless Brokenwood local who drifts from job to job before settling into running his own coffee cart, always eager to help but often out of his depth. Ok, so he’s always out of his depth! But he is fun.

There is also a scattering of clergy, small business owners, and enthusiastic gossipers who make Brokenwood feel like a real, if slightly dangerous, community.

Over time, these recurring faces give the series the feeling of visiting old friends who statistically have a surprisingly high chance of stumbling over a body.

The Town Of Brokenwood

Although Brokenwood is fictional, it’s rooted in real New Zealand landscapes and small-town atmosphere.

The show films in the greater Auckland region, using towns such as Warkworth and Helensville to stand in for Brokenwood’s streets, vineyards, and rural outskirts.

The result is a setting that feels both picturesque and lived-in, with sunlit fields, quiet roads, and cozy pubs that make the perfect backdrop for genteel murder.

The town’s economy seems to be built on wine, farming, tourism, and community events, exactly the kind of activities that, in cozy mystery logic, practically guarantee someone will not make it to dessert.

That mix of beauty and danger is part of the series’ appeal: Brokenwood is somewhere you might happily visit, as long as you avoided any local festivals, sports clubs, or amateur dramatics!

International Appeal

the brokenwood mysteries

While The Brokenwood Mysteries started life on New Zealand television, it has become a global favorite, especially among viewers who enjoy British-style cozy crime with a fresh twist.

It now airs on TVNZ 1 in New Zealand and streams internationally on platforms like Acorn TV, helping it reach audiences across North America, Europe, and beyond.

International fans have embraced its slower pace, character-driven humor, and the novelty of a Kiwi setting that still feels familiar to lovers of village mysteries.

Over the years, new broadcasters have picked up the show, from European channels to specialty mystery platforms, which has steadily expanded its fan base.

For cozy mystery viewers, The Brokenwood Mysteries offers the comfort of a classic whodunnit, the charm of recurring characters, and just enough oddness to keep every return to Brokenwood feeling like a treat.

And I, for one, cannot wait for season 12 to land in 2026!
