Murder in a Small Town Renewed For Season 3 – Here’s What We Know So Far

I have a soft spot for a mystery series that understands the power of atmosphere. Give me gray-blue water, forested coastal roads, a welcoming local library, complicated neighbors, and a detective with a quiet ache behind his eyes, and I am ready to press play.

Murder in a Small Town delivers all of that, but it also has something many cozy-adjacent mysteries struggle to find: a real emotional center.

The Canadian crime drama premiered in 2024 and follows a seasoned detective who leaves the strain of big-city policing behind for what looks like an idyllic Pacific Northwest community, but naturally, the town is considerably less peaceful than it first appears!

The series is based on the Edgar Award-winning Karl Alberg novels by Canadian author L.R. Wright, and it has built a loyal audience with its mix of murder, romance, beautiful scenery, and small-town secrets.

Paradise With Problems

Rossif Sutherland plays Karl Alberg, a detective who has relocated from Minneapolis to the coastal community of Gibsons, British Columbia.

Karl has come looking for a quieter life after the emotional weight of his previous police work catches up with him. But as cozy mystery fans know, a picturesque move is rarely simple, especially when murder keeps turning up in a town full of people who know one another’s business.

What I enjoy about Karl is that he is not the usual television detective who treats every conversation as a chance to show off.

He listens. He watches. He lets people talk themselves into revealing the truth. His experience makes him sharp, but the show also gives him a palpable weariness. He is trying to solve crimes while figuring out whether a new place and a new relationship can genuinely offer him a different future.

Each case exposes tensions underneath Gibsons’ postcard-perfect surface with family resentment, old betrayals, class divides, private grief, and the kind of secrets people convince themselves will stay buried forever.

The cases can be darker than a traditional “tea-and-scones” cozy mystery, but the series retains a comforting sensibility because it is rooted in community and every case gets solved.

Alongside that is his relationship with Cassandra Lee, which begins in the first episode, so thank you to whoever decided not to make us wait forever for them to get together!!

They, like every couple, have their ups and downs, and the second season raises the stakes by expanding Karl’s jurisdiction while Cassandra ends up on the town council.

With Marcia Gay Harden playing the mayor, there are a lot of clashes when it comes to budgets and who gets what when it comes to staffing the police department and creating an arts center – that, and the numerous cases that have to be solved!

Murder in a Small Town Renewed For Season 3

The good news is that Fox officially renewed Murder in a Small Town for Season 3 in May 2026.

The renewal follows a strong second season, which Fox said improved on Season 1’s seven-day multiplatform audience by 11 percent and reached series highs in total multiplatform viewing and streaming.

Rossif Sutherland and Kristin Kreuk are returning as Karl and Cassandra, and Season 3 will pick up after Karl’s proposal at the end of Season 2.

That gives the show a delicious new question beyond the weekly murder – can this relationship actually move forward when Karl’s job keeps pulling danger and trauma into their shared life?

The biggest casting addition is Peter Gallagher, who joins as Rod Finlayson. Rod is described as charismatic, fiercely independent, capable, and unreliable, and Fox has confirmed that his character will create upheaval for Karl and Cassandra.

No date yet on when it will premiere, but it is part of Fox’s midseason line-up, so likely to be January or February 2027. In the UK, fans can catch up on the first two seasons, which are now streaming on Netflix.

Cast and Characters

At the heart of the show are Rossif Sutherland and Kristin Kreuk, and I think their calm, grown-up chemistry is a major reason the series works so well.

Rossif Sutherland plays Chief Karl Alberg, the observant, emotionally guarded detective at the center of every investigation.

Kristin Kreuk plays Cassandra Lee, the town librarian and Karl’s romantic partner. She is intelligent, grounded, and refreshingly capable of challenging Karl rather than simply admiring him.

Aaron Douglas plays Sergeant Sid Sokolowski, a dependable member of Karl’s police team whose role expands in season 2.

On the home front, Dakota Guppy plays Holly, while Cassandra Sawtell plays Steph, his two daughters.

And season 2 added Bethany Brown as Corporal Laila Jackson, Marcia Gay Harden as Mayor Christie Holman, Marci T. House as medical examiner Dr. Angela Clyburn, Jacob Shoemay as Brett Holman, and Jodelle Ferland as Vanessa O’Keefe.

The Books Behind the Series

Murder in a Small Town draws from L.R. Wright’s nine-book Karl Alberg mystery series, sometimes called the Alberg and Cassandra mysteries.

Wright set the novels on British Columbia’s Sunshine Coast, giving the television adaptation an authentic geographical and emotional connection to its source material. Her first Karl Alberg novel, The Suspect (1985), won the 1986 Edgar Award for Best Novel.
