With only four episodes, it would be understandable if Mrs Sidhu Investigates passed you by.

If that is the case, I suggest you look it up quickly and settle in for six hours of brilliantly funny, cozy crime capers – you’ll thank me later!

Based on BBC Radio 4 series first, and with a book that followed in 2024, the show stars Meera Syal as Mrs Sidhu, a recently widowed who also happens to be a dab hand at solving crimes in her local Berkshire.

So what is it all about, why is it so good, and why should you watch it?

The Story So Far…

Mrs Sidhu is a British Indian widow, an astoundingly good caterer, and the mother of a generally hapless adult son, Tez. The food looks amazing, too!

Now in her 50s and with a shrine to her late husband inside the door of one of her kitchen cupboards, she feels invisible in the world.

Then, she takes a catering job, and when somebody ends up dead, she discovers she’s a pretty good detective as well.

The problem is that DCI Burton (Craig Parkinson) is on the case and he is in the midst of his own personal drama so quickly dismisses Mrs Sidhu’s observations regarding the crime.

After all, what would a middle-aged caterer know about solving the crime?

Slowly but surely, he begins to see that Mrs Sidhu has more going on than he first realised and begrudgingly begins to let her help him.

Between them and with the assistance of Sergeant Mint (Naana Agyei-Ampadu), and occasionally Tez (Gurjeet Singh) they piece all of the puzzle together to reveal the killer.

This is sort of the plot for all four episodes, which are each a decent 90 minutes long.

And, as with any engaging TV series, the characters evolve, so from the first crime to the fourth, Burton and Sidhu start to find a better balance in their relationship.

Season 2 Update

I wish I had great news about Mrs Sidhu Investigates season 2, but the reality is that appears to have suffered a quiet cancellation rather than a clear, public axing.

Industry status updates through late 2024 continued to list the series as “awaiting decision,” with no formal announcement from Acorn TV about its future.

However, by mid‑2025 a spokesperson comment circulated in fan spaces indicating there would be no second season, effectively confirming that the show would not return.

Because this information emerged via low‑key statements and secondary reporting rather than a dedicated press release, many viewers have been left uncertain about its fate.

That lack of fan‑facing communication, combined with the show’s single, self‑contained run, is why it is widely regarded as a quiet cancellation rather than an officially trumpeted end.

For now, it looks like we won’t get to see any more of Meera Syal as Mrs Sidhu, but if the news changes, I’ll let you know…

The Comedy

A bit like The Chelsea Detective, Mrs Sidhu Investigates has a uniquely British sense of humour which is something that Meera Syal excels at.

She is every woman trudging through a distinctly unglamorous life, under-appreciated and underestimated but with a smile on her face and a twinkle in her eye.

The comedic timing and witty banter are pitched perfectly so you’ll laugh out loud as you try to solve the case along with the characters.

All in all, it’s the perfect blend of cozy crime, comedy and food and I promise it’ll make you hungry just watching it!

Mrs Sidhu Books

On the back of a very successful radio show for the BBC and the TV adaptation for Acorn, Suk Pannu penned his first Mrs Sidhu cozy crime novel which was published in 2024.

Mrs Sidhu’s Dead and Scone has been a huge success and features the same wonderful lead character I have come to love.

The thing is though, it’s not quite as humourous as the tv show and Mrs Sidhu starts off as quite a defeated character.

She is stuck making aubergine bhajis for the frozen section of a cash-and-carry after a faux pas at a wedding practically ended her catering business.

That said, it’s another good cozy crime, and because we’ve already met the characters, it’s easy to picture them as the story progresses.

Following on from that we are also going to get Mrs Sidhu’s Just Desserts which is scheduled to be published in 2026.

Product offers are temporarily unavailable.
