Glass Onion, from director Rian Johnson, is a clever and enjoyable return to the world of mystery and intrigue that made Knives Out such a hit.

This time, Johnson invites us to join the charming and sharp-witted detective Benoit Blanc, once again played by Daniel Craig, on a luxurious Greek island where a seemingly innocent murder mystery party takes a darker turn.

The film doesn’t rely on flashy gimmicks or over-the-top action; instead, it draws you in with a well-crafted story, engaging characters, and a setting that feels both glamorous and isolated.

The beauty of Glass Onion lies in its ability to keep viewers guessing, peeling back layer after layer of the plot in a way that’s as satisfying as it is surprising.

Johnson knows how to balance humour with suspense, creating a movie that feels fresh yet familiar, like a modern twist on an Agatha Christie classic.

The ensemble cast, including Edward Norton, Janelle Monáe, and Kate Hudson, brings a lively energy to the film, making each character memorable in their own right.

Whether you’re a fan of the first Knives Out or just love a good mystery, Glass Onion offers a thoroughly entertaining experience that’s well worth watching.

Benoit Blanc Returns

In Glass Onion, Benoit Blanc is back, and this time, he’s got a lot more screen time to showcase his sharp wit and southern charm.

Unlike the first Knives Out movie, where Blanc played a more subdued role, here he is front and centre, leading us through a plot that’s reminiscent of Agatha Christie’s classic “murder on holiday” stories.

The movie features a colourful cast of characters, each with their own quirks and potential motives.

There’s Duke Cody (Dave Bautista), a brash social media influencer; Claire Debella (Kathryn Hahn), a driven politician; Lionel Toussaint (Leslie Odom Jr.), a cautious scientist; and Birdie Jay (Kate Hudson), a former model known for her unfiltered opinions.

At the centre of it all is Miles Bron, a billionaire tech mogul played by Edward Norton, whose wealth and influence keep everyone tied to him, even if they’d rather not be.

The plot thickens when these characters gather on Bron’s private island for a seemingly innocent murder mystery party.

But, of course, things take a darker turn, and the game becomes all too real when an actual murder occurs.

Adding to the intrigue is the presence of Andi Brand (Janelle Monáe), Bron’s former business partner, who may have more at stake than anyone else…

Is It A Worthy Knives Out Film?

Glass Onion is a masterclass in how to craft an engaging mystery. The movie keeps you guessing until the very end, with plenty of red herrings and clever misdirections along the way.

Daniel Craig shines as Benoit Blanc, effortlessly blending charm and a sharp intellect to create a character who’s as entertaining as he is brilliant.

His performance alone is worth the watch, but the rest of the cast is equally impressive, delivering standout performances that bring their larger-than-life characters to vivid life.

The movie’s humour is another highlight, with Rian Johnson cleverly using the characters’ personalities to poke fun at modern social media culture.

The satire is sharp but never mean-spirited, making it easy to laugh along as the characters’ antics spiral out of control.

Janelle Monáe deserves special mention for her role as Andi, bringing depth and intensity to a character who is as mysterious as the plot itself.

One of the most enjoyable aspects of Glass Onion is the way it slowly reveals its secrets.

Johnson’s script is meticulously crafted, allowing you to piece together the puzzle alongside Blanc.

So, if you’re a fan of cozy mysteries, Glass Onion is a movie you won’t want to miss.

Available on Netflix, it’s a brilliant follow-up to Knives Out, offering an even more satisfying mystery with plenty of style to keep you entertained from start to finish.

Coming in 2025…

Rian Johnson fans will be delighted to know that the third movie in the series will be making its way to Netflix in 2025.

Johnson announced the film on social media in May 2024, and we now know it will be called Wake Up Dead Man.

Although a specific release date has yet to be confirmed, as with the previous films, the movie is anticipated to debut towards the end of 2025.

The plot details remain under wraps, but Johnson has indicated that the film will continue to explore the whodunit genre with a unique twist.

He aims to create a narrative that feels distinct from the first two films, akin to the approach of Agatha Christie, with a completely new mystery and setting.

Interesting Fact

Did you know that Rian Johnson has named all three of the movies in the franchise after songs?

Knives Out is named after the song “Knives Out” by Radiohead, which Johnson has cited as influencing the film’s title, although the song does not appear in the movie.

Glass Onion – takes its title from “Glass Onion,” a song by The Beatles.

Wake Up Dead Man is titled after “Wake Up Dead Man,” a song by U2.

Such a clever guy!
