High Potential: Kaitlin Olson Shines with Brains, Wit, and a Dash of Chaos
Last Updated on April 22, 2026
I can honestly say that little gives me more pleasure than seeing a brand new cozy mystery series hit the airwaves.
We absolutely need more of them – the kind of fun, quirky shows that dial down the violence and dial up the clever sleuthing.
And that is why High Potential has become one of my new favourite shows!
ABC’s hit crime dramedy has captured audiences with its fresh take on the procedural genre – it is huge for the network.
It stars Kaitlin Olson as Morgan Gillory, a brilliant but unconventional single mother whose exceptional mind leads her from cleaning the police station to solving its most puzzling cases.
The series, which premiered on September 17, 2024, quickly established itself as one of ABC’s most successful new shows, averaging over 10.42 million viewers per night and becoming the network’s most-watched new series in six years.
As I said – HUGE!
Meet The Unconventional Morgan

Morgan Gillory isn’t your typical crime consultant. With an IQ of 160 and classified as a “high potential intellectual,” she initially works as a cleaning lady at the LAPD while struggling to make ends meet as a single mother of three.
Her life takes an unexpected turn when she spots inconsistencies on an evidence board during her night shift and rearranges the clues, leading to a breakthrough in a difficult case.
Despite initial skepticism from the department, particularly from Detective Adam Karadec (Daniel Sunjata), Morgan’s unique perspective and exceptional deductive abilities earn her a position as a consultant with the LAPD’s Major Crimes Division.
While each episode features a standalone case, a compelling season-long mystery drives the narrative: the disappearance of Roman, Morgan’s first husband and Ava’s father, who vanished 15 years ago.
Morgan agrees to be a consultant and, in exchange, her boss Selena (Judy Reyes) agrees to look into his disappearance.
The investigation takes a significant turn when Selena discovers that Roman’s car was impounded shortly after his disappearance, with a box of diapers inside, suggesting he intended to return home.
The mystery deepens when a black market dealer emerges, claiming to have information about Roman and revealing knowledge that only he and Morgan knew.
So will Morgan finally find out what happened to Roman? Watch to find out…
Cast & Characters
The show features a stellar ensemble cast led by Kaitlin Olson, whose portrayal of Morgan brings both comedy and depth to the character.
Morgan’s world includes her three children: Ava (Amirah J), a rebellious teenager searching for answers about her missing father Roman; Elliot (Matthew Lamb), her son with second ex-husband Ludo; and a newborn.
Daniel Sunjata plays Detective Adam Karadec, whose by-the-book approach often clashes with Morgan’s unconventional methods.
The supporting cast includes Javicia Leslie as Detective Daphne Forrester, Deniz Akdeniz as investigator Lev “Oz” Ozdil, and Judy Reyes as Lieutenant Selena Soto, who sees potential in Morgan despite her unorthodox approach.
Renewed For Season 2
High Potential has quickly become one of ABC’s most remarkable success stories, shattering viewership records since its September 2024 debut.
The series premiere reached an extraordinary audience of nearly 30 million viewers across all platforms and it’s popularity has only grown since then.
This success prompted ABC to move the show from its original 10 PM time slot to the coveted 9 PM Tuesday position, where it continued to flourish.
So it should come as absolutely no surprise that it has already been renewed (on January 25th), making it only the second show of the season, alongside Abbott Elementary, to secure an early renewal.
While the first season consisted of 13 episodes, the second season is expected to receive a larger episode order.
The exact number remains unconfirmed due to scheduling considerations around Olson’s commitments to It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia.
But, as always, as soon as I know – you’ll know! That said, it will return in September 2025 so now we all have something to look forward to!
And, if you’re not living in the US, you can catch the show on Disney+ internationally.
Based on a French Show
High Potential is based on the successful French-Belgian television series HPI (Haut Potentiel Intellectuel).
HPI premiered in 2021 and quickly became a cultural phenomenon, running for four successful seasons with 32 episodes.
The original series stars Audrey Fleurot (I love her) as Morgane Alvaro, whose portrayal of the eccentric genius cleaning lady turned police consultant captivated audiences with her sparkling and dynamic performance.
The American version makes several notable adjustments to suit its audience while maintaining the core premise.
Showrunner Todd Harthan deliberately made Morgan Gillory “more grounded” than her French counterpart, creating a character who maintains her quirky nature while showing more respect for the gravity of criminal investigations.
The French Morgane is portrayed as more overtly flawed, impulsive, and anti-authoritarian while her American counterpart, while still bold, has been crafted to be more relatable and less antagonistic toward law enforcement.
The adaptation has proven successful, with the French producers praising its potential as a “global brand”.
Overall, High Potential manages to keep the original’s blend of comedy and crime-solving while adding distinctly American elements that have resonated with viewers, leading to strong ratings and critical acclaim.
I love it and I know you’ll love it. So if you haven’t started watching it yet, or you were on the fence, today is as good as any to catch up with Morgan and all her chaos!
