Father Brown is one of those shows that I genuinely look forward to watching all year long. It is quintessential easy breezy TV, and I love it.

Set in the fictional Cotswold village of Kembleford in the 1950s and based loosely on G.K. Chesterton’s stories, it follows Mark Williams as the unflappable Catholic priest, Father Brown, who can’t help getting involved whenever trouble comes to town.

Over thirteen seasons, it has quietly become a daytime staple and a global favorite, mixing murder, moral questions, and warm humor in a very watchable way.

Season 13 has now finished airing in the UK, wrapping up another run of ten episodes that kept Father Brown busy with everything from Hollywood starlets to vengeful bishops.

The series continued the now-traditional New Year slot that fans have come to expect. The finale, The Bishop’s Revenge, put Canon (now bishop‑elect) Fox in danger and gave Father Brown one more high‑stakes race against time before the season bowed out.

The really good news is that the BBC has confirmed not just one, but two more seasons: seasons 14 and 15 are officially commissioned.

Filming on season 14 is already underway in the Cotswolds, with Mark Williams back in the cassock and the familiar production team behind the camera, with new episodes scheduled to air in early January 2027.

Catching Up On The Story So Far

If you’re dipping back in after a break, the broad arc of Father Brown is simple: each episode gives us a self‑contained mystery, while the core relationships slowly evolve in the background.

Across the thirteen seasons, we’ve seen the priest’s world shift as characters come and go, but Kembleford itself remains the constant village backdrop where secrets rarely stay buried for long.

The tone balances light and dark: there are murders, kidnappings, and conspiracies, but the focus stays on people’s motives and the possibility of redemption rather than shock value.

In recent seasons, we’ve watched Inspector Sullivan and his wife Isabel adjust to married life, with Sullivan still alternating between exasperation and reluctant admiration for Father Brown’s methods.

Mrs McCarthy, the parish’s formidable former housekeeper, has made welcome returns, while Brenda has stepped up in her role, bringing a more modern energy into the presbytery.

Long‑running adversaries like Father Lazarus and clerical figures such as Canon Fox have added serial tension, popping up in storylines that test Father Brown’s faith, judgment, and sense of justice.

The Who’s Who Of Father Brown

Mark Williams anchors the whole show as Father Brown, playing him as quietly observant, stubbornly kind, and more interested in saving souls than seeing people punished.

Around him, the ensemble has evolved, but a few names define the current era. Tom Chambers is back as Inspector Sullivan, the official detective who has to deal with this meddling priest but often ends up begrudgingly grateful for the help.

Claudie Blakley plays Isabel Sullivan, bringing warmth and occasional steel as she supports her husband while getting drawn into village drama.

John Burton continues as Sergeant Goodfellow, the decent, grounded policeman who often provides the bridge between Sullivan’s rule‑bound approach and Father Brown’s more intuitive style.

After five seasons, it looks like Ruby-May Martinwood, who plays Brenda, will be moving on because for season 14 the show will welcome Hannah Bristow, who takes the role of Rita, the new housekeeper.

There’s also a mix of returning semi‑regulars and newer faces. Nancy Carroll’s Lady Felicia comes back to liven up episodes with aristocratic flair and genuine affection for the priest.

On the more dangerous side, Lex Shrapnel’s Father Lazarus remains one of Father Brown’s most serious foes, promising more conflict in upcoming stories.

Britbox – Home To Father Brown Outside of the UK

If you’re in the US, the main home of Father Brown is BritBox. Past seasons are additionally available to buy on services like Prime Video, Apple TV, and Vudu, so you can pick and choose episodes if you prefer to own them.

In Australia, Father Brown is also available on BritBox, with seasons streaming as part of the regular subscription.

Season 14 And Similar Shows

By this point, Father Brown is firmly established as the UK’s top daytime drama of the last decade, airing in multiple countries including the US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, India, Italy, Denmark, Finland, and Belgium.

The combination of a recognizable lead, period setting, and approachable whodunits has given it a long life well beyond the usual span of daytime series. That international reach is one of the reasons the BBC and BBC Studios are confident enough to commission seasons 14 and 15 in one go.

Looking ahead to season 14, we can expect more of what the show does best: stand‑alone mysteries rooted in village life, with just enough ongoing character threads to keep regular viewers invested.

The BBC has already teased cases involving magicians, Meals on Wheels runs, avant‑garde artists, and even deadly spiders, all filtered through the show’s gentle but curious lens.

If you enjoy series like Grantchester or the Father Brown spin‑off Sister Boniface Mysteries, with their mix of clerical sleuthing, period detail, and cozy crime, then season 14 should feel like a very comfortable place to spend time.

I hope they find their groove back for the next seasons. The start of season 13 felt off for some reason. I think it’s the marriage bit, not really knowing how to fit Sullivan and Mrs Devine in as a married couple that lives together now.
