Netflix is officially returning to the world of clever clues and quick wit, as Enola Holmes 3 brings back Millie Bobby Brown’s sharp-minded young detective for another adventure.

Following the success of the first two films, we can once again expect a lively mix of mystery, humor, and period charm, perfectly suited to those of us who enjoy a lighter take on crime solving.

With Enola now more experienced and perhaps a little more daring, the stakes are likely to be higher than ever as she navigates both puzzling investigations and the complexities of life in Victorian England.

It’s coming soon, so when can we see it, and what is it all about?

Enola Holmes 3 Release Date

Filming began in April 2025 at Shepperton Studios in the UK and ran for around twelve weeks, with additional location work in Malta.

Now that it has all been wrapped up and post production complete, Netflix has confirmed that Enola Holmes 3 will premiere globally on the service on July 1, 2026, continuing the streamer’s hit mystery franchise.

Millie Bobby Brown returns as young detective Enola Holmes, joined again by Louis Partridge, Henry Cavill, Helena Bonham Carter, Himesh Patel, and Sharon Duncan-Brewster.

Plot: What We Know So Far

Officially, Netflix is keeping detailed plot specifics under wraps, but broad strokes have been teased.

Enola’s latest adventure takes her beyond London, with the story taking her to Malta, where a case entangles her personal life and professional ambitions in ways she did not expect.

Early descriptions hint that the mystery is more tangled and dangerous than previous cases, with Enola forced to navigate higher stakes and more formidable opponents.

Because the films have already drifted away from a strict one-book-per-film structure, the third movie is expected to use the books as inspiration rather than as a direct blueprint.

The ending of Enola Holmes 2 set up several threads for continuation: Enola establishing a London office, Sherlock gaining a new flatmate in Dr Watson, and Moriarty escaping custody, all of which offer ready-made story hooks for the new case.

Returning Characters and Cast

Millie Bobby Brown is back as Enola Holmes and again serves as a producer, suggesting the character will continue to grow in confidence and independence.

Louis Partridge returns as Viscount Tewkesbury, now more firmly positioned as Enola’s sometimes-flustered romantic interest and ally.

Henry Cavill is due to appear once more as Sherlock Holmes, with the second film’s ending and subsequent reporting indicating that he will share more scenes with Enola and Dr Watson.

Helena Bonham Carter returns as their unconventional mother Eudoria Holmes, and Himesh Patel is expected back as Dr John Watson, introduced briefly at the end of the second film.

Sharon Duncan‑Brewster, who plays Mira Troy, the series’ take on Moriarty (it’s an anagram!), is also back as part of the returning ensemble, setting up a likely continuation of that adversarial relationship.

The new film is directed by Philip Barantini (who created the mega-hit Adolescence), taking over from Harry Bradbeer, while Jack Thorne continues on script duty, keeping continuity of tone and character.

Production is backed by Netflix and Brown’s own company, PCMA Productions, reinforcing that this is now one of Netflix’s flagship family-friendly mystery franchises.

What Year Is Enola Holmes Set In?

The film remains set in late Victorian England but expands its geographical scope to include Malta, which promises a sunnier backdrop for all the skulduggery.

The first Enola Holmes film is explicitly set in the year 1884, in late Victorian England.

This is confirmed in the movie by on-screen newspapers and by Enola’s own narration, which situate her sixteenth birthday and the main events of the story in 1884.

Enola Holmes 2 is set in the year 1885, roughly a year after the events of the first film.

This is confirmed on-screen via newspaper headlines that date Sherlock’s exploits to 1885, anchoring the sequel firmly in that year.

For Enola Holmes 3, Netflix’s official materials describe the story as another late–19th-century adventure, this time taking Enola to Malta, but they do not yet specify an exact in-universe year.

Quick Summary of Enola Holmes (2020)

If you haven’t already watched the first two films in the series, here’s a quick recap – though they are good fun, so I recommend you get the popcorn out and give them a go on Netflix!

The first Enola Holmes film introduces Enola on her 16th birthday, discovering that her mother Eudoria has vanished, leaving behind only cryptic clues.

Sent towards a “proper” finishing school by her brothers Sherlock and Mycroft, she escapes to London, where she becomes embroiled in the mystery surrounding runaway young aristocrat Viscount Tewkesbury and a plot that could affect the country’s politics.

The audience loved it, and the film quickly became one of Netflix’s higher-profile family adventure titles, helping to justify the move to a continuing series.

Enola Holmes 2 (2022)

Enola Holmes 3

Of course, another film was made, and this time, Enola Holmes 2 finds Enola trying to run her own detective agency but struggling for clients, especially in the shadow of her famous brother.

Her fortunes change when factory girl Bessie asks for help finding her missing sister Sarah, pulling Enola into a mystery tied to a match factory, a supposed typhus outbreak, and a wider conspiracy involving government officials.

The sequel was well received for upping the stakes while keeping the breezy tone, with particular praise for the way it folded in the real Matchgirls Strike and gave Enola more meaningful teamwork with Sherlock and Tewkesbury.

It had stronger mystery plotting and character development, reinforcing the demand for a third outing, which is exactly what we will get in 2026!

Where Enola Holmes 3 Fits In

Narratively, Enola Holmes 3 looks set to pick up from the second film’s new status quo: Enola running a London office, Sherlock sharing digs with Watson, and Moriarty at large somewhere in the world.

Moving some of the action to Malta suggests a case with international elements, giving Enola new scenery to investigate and new social circles to quietly scandalize.

For cozy mystery fans, the third film promises more of the same comfortable mix of puzzle, character banter, and late‑Victorian atmosphere, just with a bit more sun and sea breeze.

With a July 1st, 2026 release on the cards, there is still time to rewatch the first two films, brush up on the Matchgirls Strike, and place gentle bets on just how many disguises Enola can pack into one trip to Malta!
