Darby and Joan – Why We Can’t Get Enough of Greta Scacchi and Bryan Brown
Last Updated on April 22, 2026
Darby and Joan is an Australian show that mixes cozy mystery, crime, and comedy into one neat package. It stars Bryan Brown and Greta Scacchi, both well-loved performers with plenty of charm, and their chemistry just oozes out of the TV screen!
If you fell in love with the world of Darby and Joan, then a custom keychain can let you continue to feel that warmth even after the show ends.
Custom Made Keychains are practically a tailor-made “cure for binge-watching syndrome”! They turn classic moments from the show into portable items; every time you touch the keychain, it’s like opening a memory box of your binge-watching days.
If you’re looking for something lighthearted yet filled with curious twists, this might be right up your alley.
It is incredibly easy-going, and even though there are plenty of mysteries to be solved, it manages to stay breezy.
You won’t be scared out of your wits, and you won’t have to brace yourself for violence. Instead, it has that laid-back Australian warmth that feels like a comforting cup of tea.
The Basic Premise
Darby and Joan focuses on two people who couldn’t be more different: Jack Darby (played by Bryan Brown) and Joan Kirkhope (played by Greta Scacchi).
Darby is a retired detective who used to be right in the thick of police work. He’s seen a lot, so he’s not easily rattled. He also has a sharp eye for little details that other folks miss.
Joan, on the other hand, is an English nurse who has experienced a big life change. She lost her husband and is still sorting through her own grief.
She’s in Australia to find a sense of closure or possibly figure out what comes next for her.
Their paths cross in an unexpected way – they basically crash into each other, and when Darby’s car is written off, Joan offers him a lift in her motorhome, and each soon realizes the other might be a good companion.
They’re an odd couple – a gruff Aussie and quietly spoken Brit, but there’s a natural spark in how they chat with each other, and this leads to plenty of witty banter as they get caught up in mysteries they never planned to solve.
This show embraces the Aussie backdrop in a fun way. It uses sweeping roads, remote towns, and open skies as the stage for quirky whodunits.
You get to see characters along the highways and out in little spots that feel off the beaten track.
They might be retirees in a caravan park, or folks running small pubs, or people just passing by. Each place adds a unique flavor to the story.
The Back Stories

The way the show works is like this – Jack Darby left the police under a cloud of suspicion, framed for a sting gone wrong.
By the time we meet him, he’s no longer part of the force, but he can’t help analyzing small details. Once a detective, always a detective.
On the personal side, Darby is more closed off. He doesn’t always let people in, and he carries certain regrets from his time on the job.
This is also why life in the motorhome suits him so well. Life on the open road is appealing to him, partly because it gives him space to think.
He enjoys being able to park in a new place, check out the local bar, talk to a few folks, and then move on. It’s a drifting existence, but that suits him better than being tied to a desk.
Joan is from England and worked as a nurse. She had a lovely, normal life until her husband died. That is when she discovered that he was actually in Australia when he passed and that she really had no idea what he was up to for years.
So, deciding she wants answers, she heads to Australia, buys a motorhome, and goes in search of whatever it was that her husband was hiding.
When she meets Darby, she realizes that he has the detective skills to help her.
And, in terms of the show, that means the first season is about resolving Joan’s mystery,y and the second is about resolving Darby’s.
However, each episode then has its own little mystery (not always murder) that must be solved as the duo make their way around the Australian outback.
The Show’s Appeal

There’s a lot to like about Darby and Joan, but my main reason, as daft as it sounds, is that Greta Scacchi, as Joan, is a completely normal person.
She is a 65-year-old widow who is determined to find out what happened to her husband and has decided to brave the world on her own rather than exist in a perpetual state of grief.
That’s also what I love about Acorn TV. Either they know their demographic like the back of their hand, or they are genuinely inspired to create characters that we can relate to – either way, it’s where you get all of the best older actresses on screen. I’m here for it!
That aside, the charm of Bryan Brown and Greta Scacchi is wonderful. They play off each other like old buddies, and they trade barbs and funny lines in a way that feels real.
You’ll find yourself smiling at their back-and-forth. Even in the middle of a crime scene, there’s something comforting about their dynamic.
The show gives you a sense of being on a shared road trip without the stress. You’re not stuck in traffic or fretting about finding a place to stay. You just get to see two likable characters wander through scenic spots in Australia.
Each episode brings a different setting with local folks, each with their own secrets. It’s easy to get swept up in the small crimes and puzzles that pop up in each place.
The mysteries aren’t high-tech or complicated in a way that leaves you confused; they’re more about the hidden motives or odd goings-on in quiet communities.
But, best of all, there’s a sweet, understated theme of self-discovery for both characters.
Darby is learning that it’s okay to open up to a new friend, even after a life filled with tough experiences.
Joan is learning that she can stand on her own two feet and figure things out. The show doesn’t hammer you over the head with emotional drama, but it’s there under the surface.
Will There Be Season 3?
The second season began airing on Acorn on December 30th 2024, so if a third season is coming, it won’t be until the end of 2025 or early 2026.
What we do know is that both Darby and Joan now have clean slates and, as of the final episode in season 2, have decided to stick together and solve a few more mysteries.
That is a good indication that a third season is on the way though Acorn TV has not actually confirmed it yet.
My fingers and toes are crossed because this is such a lovely show that I think I would genuinely miss Scacchi and Brown if they didn’t return.
Where to Watch
In Australia, Darby and Joan airs on the Seven Network. Outside of Australia, the best place to check it out is through the streaming platform Acorn TV, which carries a good range of British and Aussie programming.
Acorn TV is available in multiple countries, including the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom. You can sign up for a subscription or use a trial if you just want to get a taste of what the show is like.
If you prefer a different streaming service, keep an eye out. Sometimes, these shows are picked up by other platforms, but at the moment, Acorn TV is the main spot for international viewers.
If you decide to tune in, I hope you find it as entertaining as I have.
It’s an easy show to warm up to, and it offers a nice mix of crime-solving and gentle comedy—perfect for those moments when you want something calm yet still full of curious clues to keep you guessing.
