Bookish Season 2 is Confirmed – The Cozy Crime Hit Is Coming Back in 2026
Last Updated on April 22, 2026
In recent years, cozy mystery TV shows have become a staple for viewers yearning for suspenseful plots without the relentless grit of traditional crime dramas.
Shows like High Potential, Agatha Raisin, and Sister Boniface Mysteries have found a dedicated audience, celebrating eccentric characters, picturesque settings, and clever deductive puzzles.
Now, joining these favorites is Bookish, another standout that’s just been renewed for an exciting second season.
What Is Bookish?
Bookish is a British period crime drama set in post-war 1946 London. Created by Mark Gatiss, better known as the co-creator behind Sherlock, the series premiered in the UK on U&Alibi in July 2025 and quickly cultivated a devoted following.
The show’s tone is brisk, witty, and atmospheric, wrapping each mystery in nostalgia and warm, book-lined aesthetics, perfect for fans of both cerebral puzzles and cozy storytelling.
It was an instant hit in the UK, with the premiere episode drawing approximately 270,000 viewers, far exceeding the usual slot average of around 43,000 on the channel.
A further industry report noted the series reached an audience high of 320,000 at its peak, easily the channel’s strongest launch for an original drama in 2025.
So of course it was renewed! In fact, it was renewed for a second season before the first even aired, such is their faith in Mark Gatiss. And we are sooooo glad that they did!
In even better news, production for Bookish season 2 is already underway – hurrah!
Bookish Season 2 Is Official!
After debuting in July 2025, the show’s offbeat charm, period details, and strong ensemble drove a strong response from critics and fans alike.
Notably, the show even achieved a 100% Rotten Tomatoes score in its first season, cementing its status as a fresh fixture in the cozy mystery landscape.
The latest updates are especially exciting. Scripts for season 2 are already complete, and the cast has recently completed their first read-through.
Production is set to begin this summer, putting the show on track for a likely release in 2026.
Original leads Gatiss, Walker, Finch, Kömür, and Levey are all confirmed to return, and more information about upcoming guest stars will be shared as filming progresses.
This active production process means that loyal viewers shouldn’t have to wait too long before diving back into Bookish’s world of books, secrets, and intelligent deduction.
Expect season 2 to match or even surpass the ambition of the first, with new cases and (no doubt) more cozy twists.
Our New Favorite Sleuth – Gabriel Book
At the heart of Bookish is Gabriel Book, played by Gatiss himself. Gabriel is an antiquarian bookshop owner in Archangel Lane, a character blessed with a near-photographic memory and an insatiable curiosity.
Gabriel collaborates with the local police to unravel complex crimes, drawing on his encyclopedic knowledge found within his shop’s shelves.
Supporting him is Trottie Book (Polly Walker), Gabriel’s wife, business partner, and closest confidante.
While their marriage is a “lavender” one, the pair share genuine affection and mutual loyalty. Trottie owns the neighboring wallpaper store and often brings her own flair and resourcefulness to investigations.
The duo is joined by Jack Blunt (Connor Finch), a young ex-convict who becomes Gabriel’s assistant in the shop and, later, in solving mysteries.
Jack adds a layer of intrigue and redemption to the team, especially as his own backstory becomes entwined with the mysteries at hand.
Inspector Bliss (Elliott Levey) represents official law enforcement, reluctantly impressed by Gabriel and Trottie’s efforts, while Nora (Buket Kömür) is an aspiring crime novelist whose observations sometimes prove useful.
The cast is rounded out by recurring guests, including Blake Harrison as Sergeant Morris and a roster of well-known British actors who appear as suspects or clients in each two-part case.
Each six-episode season consists of three main storylines, with every narrative arc spanning two installments, ensuring engaging, layered storytelling without overstaying any single plot.
Where (and How) to Watch Bookish
Fans in the UK can stream every episode of Bookish exclusively on U&Alibi (Sky channel 114, Virgin Media, and NOW), with episodes becoming available on demand immediately after broadcast.
The first season launched as a double-bill on July 16, 2025, with two new episodes debuting each Wednesday over three weeks.
For viewers who prefer to binge, all six episodes are accessible as a box set from launch via Sky Box Sets and NOW.
US Broadcast: Where is Bookish Headed Stateside?

The show made its worldwide premiere at a festival in Italy in late June, with its initial UK rollout a few weeks later.
For US fans eager to join the sleuthing, the good news is that PBS has acquired the North American rights.
Although the exact US premiere date for season 1 hasn’t been finalized, Bookish is set to air on PBS later in 2025.
Once officially scheduled, episodes will be dropped on PBS’s primetime drama lineup, in keeping with the network’s tradition of airing top British imports.
Season 2 is expected to follow the same pattern, hitting US screens after its UK debut. Viewers should keep an eye on PBS’s official schedules and streaming offerings for on-demand access as well.
Why This Show Stands Out
In the ever-growing garden of cozy crime TV, Bookish thrives thanks to its compelling setting of post-war London along with layered characters, and a light touch with social issues of the time.
The thoughtful depiction of Gabriel’s sexuality, the honor and warmth in his marriage with Trottie, and the inclusive spirit of the show’s wider found-family dynamic make it stand out among contemporary mysteries.
It is proof that even in a crowded genre, freshness and authenticity can break through. With Bookish season two already in progress, we can look forward to more brain-teasing mysteries, bookended by warmth, wit, and a touch of 1940s glamour.
