Beyond Paradise is the cheerful, heartwarming British cozy crime mystery series and the first-ever spin-off from the much-loved Death in Paradise.

Launched in 2023, the show quickly built a loyal following, drawing audiences into the fictional Devon town of Shipton Abbott.

At the heart of every episode is DI Humphrey Goodman, played by Kris Marshall, who moved from the sunny Caribbean to the sometimes chilly but always scenic West Country.

The blend of rural English life, quirky townsfolk, and a puzzle-of-the-week formula struck a chord with mystery fans of all ages.

From the Caribbean to Cornwall

The show follows DI Humphrey Goodman and his fiancée, Martha Lloyd, as they start a new chapter away from the tropics.

Shipton Abbott’s peaceful surface hides a regular undercurrent of baffling crimes, from missing paintings to mysterious disappearances, solved by Goodman’s gently eccentric methods.

Martha balances running her café and fitting in with the local community, while Humphrey tries to win over Martha’s mother, Anne, and grapples with the quirks of English village life.

Since its debut, Beyond Paradise has been one of the BBC’s top-performing dramas, with Series 3 pulling in over 5.5 million viewers per episode and earlier series notching up even higher numbers – as many as 7.5 million fans tuned in for key episodes.

Its gentle humour, picturesque setting, and feel-good tone set it apart in the crowded cozy mystery genre.

Christmas Special 2025

Beyond Paradise Christmas

The Beyond Paradise Christmas special promises to be another cozy treat in 2025.

The special airs on BBC One and iPlayer on December 21, 2025, and is also expected to join the BritBox line-up for fans in the US and Canada.

The story opens with a group celebration in Shipton Abbott that sets the stage for the central mystery – as guest star Barbara Flynn hints, Martha has a secret surprise in store for everyone this Christmas.

Meanwhile, DS Esther Williams discovers a man on the steps of the police station. He has no memory and only a photograph of Humphrey, which sends the whole team scrambling to uncover his identity, all while festive cases pile up and an unexpected flurry of holiday crimes keeps them busy.

Adding to the drama, Kelby comes to the rescue of a local who’s ended up trapped inside a snowman suit—yes, really!

Between these antics, the episode promises a heartwarming reunion and, according to the BBC, “a life-changing reveal” that could shake up the futures of the central characters.

It’s set to be both moving and funny, a balance Beyond Paradise manages so well.

Returning and Guest Stars

The full core cast is back, with new guest stars joining for added sparkle.

Details on most of the guests have been revealed, so expect memorable performances from the likes of Adrian Edmondson (Alien: Earth), James Lance (Ted Lasso) and Jonny Weldon (One Day).

The Story So Far

And, just in case you haven’t already watched it, here’s a quick recap on the show for you…

Across three series of Beyond Paradise (and a fourth on the way), we have watched Martha and Humphrey’s relationship grow through ups, downs, and the unending parade of crimes.

Martha’s struggles with her business, Anne’s journey through grief, and Humphrey’s socially awkward yet brilliant detective work have all been highlights.

The team around them is warm, funny, and always ready to lend a hand or a smile (even if occasionally wrapped up in a snowman costume).

The cast features Kris Marshall as the charming, accident-prone DI Humphrey Goodman and Sally Bretton as business-savvy, kind-hearted Martha Lloyd.

Barbara Flynn plays Anne Lloyd, Martha’s candid and caring mother. Zahra Ahmadi is DS Esther Williams, bringing practicality and warmth to the team.

Dylan Llewellyn (PC Kelby Hartford), Jamie Bamber (Archie Hughes), Felicity Montagu (Margo Martins), and Melina Sinadinou (Zoe Williams) are regulars.

Each brings their own dynamic energy to the show’s cozy, community atmosphere.

Why Does Beyond Paradise Work?

For me, and many other fans, it’s the combination of smart whodunnits, believable flawed characters, and an inviting community of neighbours, friends, and family that makes it an ideal cozy mystery.

The show manages to feel like a warm hug, even when the weather in Shipton Abbott is anything but.

Light romance, community spirit, and family sit seamlessly alongside missed clues, red herrings, and surprise reveals.

The Cornish and Devonian scenery is the icing on the cake—always making me wish I could solve a mystery with a seafront view.

How to Watch

Beyond Paradise is available on BBC One, with prior seasons ready to stream on BBC iPlayer and Britbox for a bit of catch-up before the Christmas special airs.

Whether you’re new to Shipton Abbott or a devoted regular, there’s a lot to enjoy and plenty to look forward to this Christmas.

If you love your mystery with a festive twist, you won’t want to miss the Beyond Paradise Christmas Special in 2025!
