Mini Biography
Ian James Rankin was born on April 28, 1960, in Cardenden, Fife, Scotland, to James and Isobel Rankin.
An avid reader since childhood, Rankin attended the University of Edinburgh, graduating in 1982. He spent several years writing novels when he was supposed to be pursuing a PhD in Scottish literature, a detour that paid off handsomely.
Before his writing took off, Rankin held a variety of jobs, including grape-picker, swineherd, hi-fi magazine journalist, and even a taxman. His first novel, The Flood (1986), was followed by Knots and Crosses (1987), introducing the world to John Rebus.
After living in London and France for a period, Rankin settled with his wife and family in Edinburgh, the city that continues to inspire much of his fiction.
