Authors Like Janet Evanovich for Your Next Cozy Mystery Fix
Last Updated on April 22, 2026
I have always felt that reading a Janet Evanovich book is like catching up with a friend who gets into trouble far more often than you do, yet somehow makes it look fun.
The Stephanie Plum books give us crime, charm, and chaos with a side of comfort, which is why so many readers stick with the series year after year.
But now and then, even the most loyal fan wants something new while still keeping that same warm feeling.
So I wanted to share a few writers like Janet Evanovich who give me that same spark. They all write lively cozy crime stories with humor, heart, and a lead character who feels real enough to chat to over coffee.
Some feature long-running series. Some offer a slight twist on the cozy style. All of them have a voice that I think Evanovich fans will enjoy.
Leslie Meier – Lucy Stone Mysteries

Whenever I need something easy to read with a cozy small town mood, I often reach for a Leslie Meier book.
Her long-running series follows Lucy Stone, a part-time reporter who lives in the pretty town of Tinker’s Cove in Maine.
Lucy juggles family life and work while stumbling into crimes that seem to appear around every corner.
The books often follow seasonal events. There is a Christmas mystery, a Thanksgiving mystery, a Valentine story and plenty more besides.
This rhythm gives the whole series a gentle structure. It feels almost like checking in with a neighbour at different points of the year.
The tone is light, and the crimes are never too grim. The focus stays on Lucy and the people around her.
Watching her move through family moments while feeling compelled to investigate a new case is one of the simple pleasures of reading the series.
Why Evanovich Fans Will Enjoy It
Lucy is not a bounty hunter, and she does not blow up cars on a daily basis, yet she has the same down-to-earth quality that makes Stephanie Plum so easy to follow.
Lucy is smart, honest and often tired, which makes her very relatable. If you enjoy the everyday comedy that comes with trying to keep your life in order while dealing with people who never make it easy, then Leslie Meier is a safe and enjoyable choice.
Dorothy Cannell – Ellie Haskell Mysteries

Dorothy Cannell brings a lovely mix of charm, farce and traditional mystery to her Ellie Haskell series.
Her books have a slightly British feel, even when events drift into more outrageous territory. That balance of manners and mayhem is one of the reasons I enjoy recommending her to Evanovich fans.
The first Ellie Haskell book became popular because of its mix of romance, comedy and village intrigue.
Ellie begins as a housewife with a strong interest in mystery fiction. Over time she wades into investigations that blend quirky humor with rather bold character behavior.
The cast grows with each book. Ellie’s friend Mrs Malloy is especially entertaining. She often sweeps into the story with strong opinions and very little concern about whether those opinions are welcome.
When the two of them start sleuthing, the plot usually speeds up in the most enjoyable way!
Why It Works for Stephanie Plum Fans
If you enjoy the chaos that tends to follow Stephanie Plum, you will feel right at home with Ellie and Mrs Malloy.
Cannell has a good sense of timing and she never pushes the jokes too far.
The books give a nice mix of comedy and mystery without losing sight of the characters who make the series shine.
Nancy Coco – Candy-Coated Mysteries

Nancy Coco writes cozy crime stories set in fun, food filled locations. One of her most popular series is the Candy Coated Mystery set on Mackinac Island.
These books have cooking, romance and crime mixed into a story that never takes itself too seriously.
The mysteries follow Allie McMurphy who runs a historic fudge shop on the island. She wants a peaceful life but the island has other ideas.
Bodies tend to appear at the worst moment, usually just as she is trying to get a new batch of fudge ready. Anyone who has tried baking under pressure will understand her frustration.
Allie has a lively circle of friends, a cute dog and a habit of noticing things that other people walk straight past.
The island setting is part of the charm. The limited space means suspects often brush shoulders with each other, and Allie finds herself at the centre of local gossip.
Thumbs Up
Allie is funny without trying to be, and the situations she lands in are often chaotic without feeling forced.
The tone is light and warm. There is comfort in returning to the fudge shop and watching Allie attempt to run a normal business while crime keeps knocking on her door.
Much like Stephanie Plum, Allie has a sense that her life would be much easier if people stopped doing foolish things. Of course, that would make for a very short book.
Jenn McKinlay – Library Lover’s Mysteries

Jenn McKinlay has several cozy mystery series, and they all share a friendly tone and a strong sense of place.
Her Library Lover’s Mysteries are a perfect starting point for anyone who likes a smart lead character and a cast of people who bring both trouble and charm.
The books feature Lindsey Norris, a library director in the coastal town of Briar Creek.
Lindsey loves books, community events and helping people find the right novel. What she does not love is stumbling into crime scenes, yet the job seems to bring this problem on a regular basis.
There is gentle romance, plenty of book talk and a library staff who feel like people you could meet in real life.
The mysteries themselves are steady and enjoyable. They give Lindsey enough clues to work with while allowing plenty of space for character moments.
Ticks Plenty of Boxes
Lindsey is confident and able, yet she often finds herself pulled into situations that test her sense of calm.
Her frustration can be very funny, and her ability to talk herself into and out of trouble feels similar to Stephanie Plum during her more hectic moments.
If you enjoy a mix of cozy romance and crime with a bookish twist, Jenn McKinlay is a great pick. She understands the charm of small communities and the way friendships grow over time.
Donna Andrews – Meg Langslow Mysteries

If you enjoy humor in your mysteries then Donna Andrews is an easy recommendation if you’re looking for an author like Janet Evanovich.
Her long running Meg Langslow series is full of fast dialogue, eccentric relatives and crime that seems to follow Meg with the persistence of a very determined pigeon.
Meg tries to live a calm life, but her family does not allow that for long. From weddings to holidays to unexpected visitors, her days tend to shift from normal to chaotic in a heartbeat.
The mysteries usually unfold while Meg attempts to keep everyone else under control which is a losing battle from the start.
The books are known for their comic timing and lively cast. There is always someone saying something they should not say. There is always a situation that teeters on the edge of disorder.
Meg stands in the middle of it all with a steady sense of patience that I admire.
A Fun Recommendation
The humor feels natural and never tries too hard. Meg is capable but surrounded by people who pull her into scenes that feel wonderfully familiar to anyone who has tried to keep a big family on track.
If you enjoy the sense of chaos that follows Janet Evanovich’s characters, the Meg Langslow books will give you a similar comfort.
The mysteries are satisfying and the comedy adds a pleasant lift to even the most tangled moments.
So Many Books So Little Time
I love the Stephanie Plum books for their blend of crime, warmth and genuine human behavior.
The authors above offer something close to that same experience. They each write grounded female leads who try to keep their lives steady while crime unfolds around them.
Some bring small town charm. Others lean into chaos or comedy. All five offer that cozy mystery comfort that keeps us turning pages long after we planned to stop.
If you try any of these series I hope they bring you the same pleasure they bring me.
And if you find another writer who scratches that same itch, feel free to send the name my way.
I am always ready for another cozy mystery fix.
